Goethe Zentrum, ART SPACE & Moufflon present : A Book for a Lifetime - Artists’ Books from 12 Countries
The Artspace 31 Pygmalionos Str(end of Ledra Street) + Moufflon Bookshop Sofouli Street, Lefkosia
22/11 - 13/12 2008

—————————————————————————————————————————

On Saturday, 22 November 2008, at 19.30 hrs, the public will have the opportunity to get to know the young genre of the artists’ book at The Artspace, a studio with a multicultural artists’ collective.

German multi media artist Horst Weierstall, the curator of the exhibition, launched an appeal to artists worldwide to send in their creation of an artists’ book. 60 artists from 12 countries, among them America, Australia, Brazil, Great Britain, Greece, Israel, Korea, Romania, Syria, responded to the appeal. In addition, there is a considerable number of German and Cypriot artists among the participants.

An artist’s book may be “one of a kind”, an individual book created by the artist himself, or it may be an “altered book”, an already existing book that the artist manipulated and changed following the impulse of his creativity. In his book “When fiction lives in fiction” Jorge Luis Borges says: “Schopenhauer wrote that being awake or dreaming represent the page of one single book and that true reading of its pages when you leaf through it at random means “living” and “dreaming”. Pictures within pictures and books which extend into other books help us to perceive this unity.”

“It is only during the last hundred years that the Artists’ Book has acquired an identity. Although built upon very old traditions, it has finally emerged as distinct from any of its contributing antecedents. While sculpture, painting, printmaking or photography have longer histories, the Artists’ Book is a new hybrid, similar to the film and the video, freed from institutions, curators, collectors and patrons, what Malraux in the forties described as a ‘Museum without Walls’. It has attracted many artists across the world, who have found ways to realize the concept of the museum or the gallery within a book form. ”, Sign to Action, Moufflon Publications.

After the opening of the Artists’ Book Exhibition on 22 November at The Artspace, Haris Pellapaisiotis, initiator of ARTTALKS, will present the artists’ book project on Tuesday, 25 November, 19.30 hrs, at Moufflon Bookshop , commenting on “The Anxiety of Pleasure” in this context. A gathering will take place on Friday, 28 November, 19.30 hrs, at the premises of the Goethe-Zentrum Nicosia near the old Ledra Palace Hotel (Tel.: 22 674 608) when multimedia artist Horst Weierstall will give a presentation of all the artists’ books and discuss the artists’ book production with the audience under the headline ”Visual Reading Sensing Meaning”. Finally, he will give a talk on “Image and Text”, placing the artists’ book in the context of literature.
