Stoa Aeschylou presents MONDAYS AT ARCADE
—————————————————————————————————————————
15/12 2008
- 24/02/2009 Mondays 20:00 75 Aeschylou Street,
Faneromeni, 1011 Lefkosia
Non-profit cultural
organisation “Stoa Aeschylou” launches its next activity: Mondays
at Arcade, part of Arcade E.A.P - a series
of experimental workshops / exhibitions providing opportunity for
dialogue related to contemporary artistic creation.
Arcade is an art space where exhibitions, lectures, workshops, publications
of digital and print media are hosted and which aims to contribute
to the development of artistic expression, with Cyprus being the
core. The active involvement of the artists themselves in the production
and the redaction of the exhibitions in which they participate and
the fact they are given the opportunity to act as curators in the
activities they organise, is what differentiates the organisation
from similar projects and organisations.
Exhibitions
The program
first began with the exhibition “Rolling Frame”, in June 2008. This
was followed with the workshop “Big Other’s Little Others” that
took place the same year. The activity “Mondays at Arcade” beginning
in December 2008 and that will last three months, will be followed
by the workshop “Road Words”. The project “Arcade E.A.P” will continue
and during 2009 with exhibitions that will be announced in the near
future.
Mondays
at Arcade
Time
The aim of the “Mondays at Arcade” activity is to cause the creation of a series of exhibitions that will deal with the sense of an art event not as a result of a long term process but as something temporary or directly related to the sense of time. Time as a concept function, as a determinative element for the creation of a work of art.
The limited time of presentation of the exhibition, is what makes it an “art performance”.
.
The Space
The works of art that will be presented are affected or adjusted
in the architectural character of the building (installations inside
the space and sculpture), whether this is functional (the space
is transformed into a concept place or a temporary bar) or directly
related and created by taking into consideration the area of Aeschylou
Street and the general morphology of the old town of Nicosia. The
participating artists, have prepared particular works for the “Mondays
at Arcade” exhibition, based on the time frame, given for the exhibitions
(open only for 24 hours). The works that will be presented are installations
inside the space, performances, sculpture and photography and musical
performances. During the exhibitions there will be an open bar that
will help us understand better the sense and the temporary character
of an “art performace”.
Artists/Organisers:
Panikos Tempriotis and Demetris Neocleous.
Commencement-Duration
of Activities:
The first activity
will commence on 15 December 2008 and the project will be completed
on the 24 February 2009.
The activities which have a duration of 24 hours or two days (in
each activity the duration will be adjusted to the needs of the
exhibition and will be announced accordingly) will be presented
as follows:

Mind Black Mind
The mind is
empty. Empty time. Fast time. Slow time. Darkness. Faded images
and indefinite sounds that exist in the mind. A frozen sense, like
a dream…” In the work I am going to present, there isn’t an existing
concept. This work will be the result of experimenting and my conversation
with the particular space and my stay during those days. I will
start by creating a site-specific installation using three elements
as a basis. Black color, a sound composition and time.
Short Bio
Foutris first started his career as a painter developing an interest
in arrogation and the application of new media, traditional media,
as well as the methods of elaboration of contemporary digital images
and elements. He incorporated into his work the visual language
from various cultural areas such as Gothic and the heavy metal culture,
using painting, installations, the environment and performances.
His work deals with the communication layer of the traditional concepts
of art and the contemporary art language. He deals with concepts
such as the supernatural sense of Holy, the Monumental and the Great,
the dark side of the Human Nature, Utopia and Romance.

Μαρίνα Γεωργίου
We cannot expect any answers or solutions in life’s big questions, with the help of art. On the other hand, we can react with art and maybe have a sneak peak through the truth that art reveals. Simple objects and ideas, that maybe exposed and be accepted as art, fascinate me. My work is affected by simplicity and the direct language of reality. I use “ready-made” materials, as well as the human body. My work connects photography with sculpture. .

(The end of innocence)
When we first hear the word “child”, we automatically bring into mind the words innocence, carelessness and joy. When we were children and we knew that that was the time where children start to experiment, trying to get to know themselves and the worlds and express from a very young age.
Many scientists claim that children are aware of their sexual identity as early the age of fine. That’s why, that particular age is dangerous. Especially when they are receivers of external influences such as sexual harrasmement from close to them persons or from strangers of even rapes. This can stigmatize a child for life. And this is even more likely to happened, especially during these times we live where child pornography is spreading rapidly. Through this work I want to show the beginning and the end of innocence.

Αγνή Δημητρίου
You are born in this world as pure as water. However, you never know what might come along. Sometimes, some facts, may lead you in diluting even destroying, in some cases, that innocence you had inside you. So you turn into a victim of your own life. Being a victim of life, doesn’t mean that you lose your innocence, simply because innocence is hidden deep inside your soul, somewhere where no one can reach it, somewhere where no one can feel what you feel.
This work will project the sensibility of this matter, using fragile materials and some photographic moments that will highlight these questions on lives and the undeserved course of life of those women.

Stance
over Time-Distance

Time is mine
for the making. Distance is mine for the breaking.
Time I can expand only in understanding. Distance I can overcome
only through communicating.
Time is rhythm. Time is action. Time is all, my realization.
Distance is Time and yet not. Distance is only physical. Time is
never typical.
Time is only a breath away. Distance is far only as a thought.
A six-hour day with live performances.
For the realization of the project: “Mondays at Arcade” will take place between two countries, Cyprus and France ( Strasburg). Mary Catherine Christodoulou from Cyprus will be in live communication with Despo Theocharidou who lives in France, during a 24-hour time frame.
During that Monday, we will create our own time frame of one day that will be 6-hour. That means that one hour from our time, will equal with 4 hours of real time.
Through this made-up time we will execute certain acts and will give directions to one another. Our idea aims at the breakdown of distance as a physical sense, with the use of technology, as well as the recreation of our appreciation of time.

Adi
Atassi (Lefkosia)

Instead of working inside the space of a workshop, I have chosen to work for a week, in the centre of Nicosia, in Aeschylou Street. The old town of Nicosia is, as far as I am concerned, a core of life. It’s an inextricable part of my daily life, since I live, work and breath here. Here you can feel the pulse of the city, here is the place where you are “in touch” this country. The people who walk in its streets, the voices, the sounds, the colours, the smells, all these are elements composing this city’s canvas. This is what I will be presenting during the days before and during the exhibition.
Short Bio:
Adi Atassi is an artist from Syria who lives and works in Nicosia. He has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions in Cyprus and abroad.

«In the world
of...»

I am interested in the idea of “a person in his world”. The exhibition “In the world of…” may imply two situations:
1. In his environment, from the aspect of a “general frame” in which this person lives and exchanges messages with
And
2. “In his world…” , which he composes on his own, using his dreams, “ideas” and “wishes”.
I see points 1 and 2 as groups that are defined by their general parts. For example, in 1, we are referring to a space in which there is a person in a particular time, in a particular time frame or this person’s body with the muscles and strength they have in a certain age, or just gravity.
In group 2, Superman and Spiderman are members as “projections” of what we would have liked to be.
Some of the processes that I deal with have to do with 1 and some others with 2.
But the most interesting are the ones that have to do with the intersection ( if there is any) or the unification of these two groups. For example, there is a Superman for 15 minutes or an image where certain things ( not all) do not follow the rules of gravity and so they only head up.
Generally, everything depends on certain rules, some of them we create “ad hoc” just as a matter of habit or in order to be able to move one.
This game of rules, is pure fun but also an end in itself.

Lost…

Between worlds,
words, thoughts, moments, noise…the sense of feeling lost, an adventure
without ending, an experience, an experimental trip… Many works
of art are imposed-produced in a strict tangible, commercial sphere.
Where and how to experiment, where and how to define ourselves if
we just follow trends and methods of a continuing flattening lifestyle
in a ultra capitalistic consumerist society, where “values” are
coincided with the self-exposure through material products where
someone successful is identified through them, uses and manages
to present them as “values” , for example, his mobile phone or the
car he drives. This work is not for sale…this work does not exist…unless
you become a part of it…are you for sale?

a ten-year nomad lifestyle and producing art, and having participated

Experience: An act of earthly dimension
The sub-is is
a parasitic existence with unique values (existing character). It
works along with the human body, when it’s in an embryonic stage
(after the 3rd month of pregnancy). To sub-is is involved with the
human brain and their relationship becomes absolute. During birth,
the sub-is, is already dependant from the carrier, concerning its
three dimensional earthly existence. Through their relation, many
conditions are created, in order to produce energy. These are called
experiences and…
